CFCR community radio and our pals over at televised house show series The Neighbor’s Dog are really, really (really) excited to present an intimate live show by Rhode Island folk-rock outfit The Low Anthem. The band is in town opening for City & Colour, but the day before that show goes off, they’re playing a gig at a secret location for a small group of fans.

The Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival will be kicking off the 2012 edition of their film series, Six Degrees of Jazz, with the classic Beatles movie A Hard Day’s Night at the Broadway Theatre at 7pm on Tuesday, January 24. Experience this classic music flick on 35mm film!

Check out a track by Haunted Souls, a new band on the Saskatoon bandscape, who has contributed a track to an upcoming vinyl compilation of bands from Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Here’s something to warm up one of the first actually cold days Saskatoon has seen in an eerily long time (it’s -27 with the windchill). Shooting Gun and Golden Smoker Chris Laramee also makes loopy soundscape music under the Wasted Cathedral banner, and he’s in the process of releasing a couple of cassettes via Winnipeg label Prairie Fire Tapes this winter.

Here’s one last Best-of-2011 list for the pile, and it’s a doozy. Canada’s premier campus/community radio charting agency, !earshot announced their National Top 200 list this week, and albums by Saskatoon bands The Deep Dark Woods, Shooting Guns and The Sheepdogs have made the grade.

Making records is expensive. Ask anyone who does it — for instance, hard-working Saskatoon acoustic guitar pickin’ singer Zachary Lucky. He’s been saving up to release his new album Saskatchewan, and to raise some dough for the venture, Lucky has just digitally released a live album on his bandcamp site.

Her two-hour set whizzed by in what felt like a very entertaining few moments. It even included impromptu renditions of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Cheers theme songs. Any concert that randomly includes moments like these is a winner in my book.
