FATHER FIGURES BECOME CASTLE RIVER

March 13th, 2012

Local Saskatoon blues-infused rock duo Father Figures have changed their name to Castle River. The official announcement came as part of the band’s performance for CBC Radio’s concert series On A Cold Road, which took place last Saturday at the Broadway Theatre.

After releasing an EP and playing bucket loads of shows around town under the Father Figures banner, the band decided to change their name on the eve of the fourth installment of On A Cold Road, which will air nationally and online in the coming months. Local music blog Ominocity caught up with Matt & Billy of Castle River shortly after the announcement to get the scoop. Check out their quickie interview here.

CFCR PRESENTS: HENRY ROLLINS

March 9th, 2012

CFCR and the Union are proud to present Henry Rollins, Thursday June 7th at the Broadway Theatre.

HENRY’s relentless globetrotting to far-flung and often misunderstood corners of the globe is also the focus of his latest book, Occupants (Chicago Review Press), his first book of photos from his travels. Penetrating observations and incisive essays accom-pany the photos, as HENRY juxtaposes the disturbing legacy of war and conflict with the hope, bravery, and kindness of humans around the world; the tragic effects of hun-ger and poverty with the strength and beauty of those living in dire circumstances.

Tickets are available HERE, and a limited amount are available at the Broadway Theatre box office.

CFCR members: stay tuned to 90.5FM and cfcr.ca for your chance to win tickets!

PSA: SASKATOON HERITAGE OPEN HOUSE THIS WEEK

March 6th, 2012

In a rapidly expanding city such as Saskatoon, the issue of historical preservation often comes up. Whether it’s what to do about that building, bridge or green space, as our city grows, it risks losing important pieces of its heritage.

Recently, the city hired two heritage consultants to survey the city and develop a plan for how to deal with our historical landmarks and structures.

On Thursday, March 8th, these experts will present their findings during two public open houses, taking place at 6pm and 7pm at 3rd Avenue United Church (304 3rd Ave N). Those interested in the future of our historical buildings and identity are encouraged to attend.

CFCR PREMIERE: NEW SHOOTING GUNS TRACK

March 1st, 2012

Local inst-doom-mentalists Shooting Guns have been riding the wave of their amazing 2011 album Born to Deal in Magic 1952-1976 for a little while now, so they thought it was high time they put something new out to destroy our collective ear drums. This something new comes in the form of a split 7″ record with UK psych-rock band Cult of Dom Keller. The single features a new Guns track on the A-side called “Down And Out in Detroit” and “Painted Skulls” by Cult of Dom Keller on the flip.

Clocking in at 3:08, the comparatively short song follows the Shooting Guns’ model of the musical Blizzard, so thick you gotta spoon it up.

Local upstart label Leaning Trees will put it’s stamp of approval on the record, which should be available sometime in March. You can check out the Shooting Guns side at Leaning Trees’ Soundcloud below:

Local artist John Vaughn provided the cover art for the Shooting Guns side, which you can see above. Pre-order for the single is on now through Leaning Trees’ store.

Shooting Guns have a few shows coming up, starting with an appearance at Ominocity.com’s one-year anniversary party, Omfest, this Saturday at Louis’ on the U of S campus. Ominocity just jazzed up their site today, so have a look now!
