The Fjords

Get It Right
album
The Fjords have been a favourite Saskatoon act of mine for years. When rumours began a few years ago that their full-length might finally see the light of day, I was fearful. I was worried that there may have been some lost musical momentum or a major change in sound. Thankfully, my fears were all for naught. The people demanded a Fjords album and that is exactly what they got.

Get It Right, the band’s first full-length album -- and first release since their self-titled 2005 EP -- contains one of the best “live” sounds I’ve heard in years. In fact, the CD format seems to barely restrain these songs from jumping right out of the speakers! Bright, rich guitar tones reign throughout every song and are backed up by an excellent rhythm section which is tastefully flashy at points without becoming obnoxiously showy. Strong power-pop influences ring clearly through while also dragging along several other influences which, at points, I can’t always put my finger on.

The album bursts forth with a catchy tune which makes you want to turn up the volume ("Come My Way"), setting a good pace for this musical journey. Continuing through early songs on the album, the Fjords play with variety, dishing out a different flavour of their well-known sound which is sure to please new and old fans alike. Some songs salute a stoner-blues influence ("The Snow Road") while others really play up the powerful rock anthem ("I’m Afraid of the City and the Night," "All I’m Asking").

A bad song on this album does not exist. Instead, some songs are so incredibly well-written and executed that it makes some of the other ones pale in comparison. Those familiar with Luke Ryalls' solo effort The City will be pleased with electric versions of some of his songs on the Fjords album.

Listen to this album while you’re driving down Highway 219 at night or while you’re flexing your muscles on the beach. I don’t care. This album is awesome.
