GET TO KNOW A CFCR VOLUNTEER!

This month, we’re getting to know host Josie Dabo. Josie started her hosting career a few years ago with CFCR’s Collective Voice program (Mondays, 6:30-7pm), which is programmed by a Grade 9 class at Aden Bowman. Since then, Josie has done some excellent volunteer work for the station, as a fill-in host and now as the weekly host of the Thursday RCMP (4-5pm). Recently, Josie started hosting the Thursday Buzz (5-6pm) as well, so you can enjoy her upbeat and bubbly personality for two hours every week! Josie has also helped out at CFCR events and has joined our street team, putting up posters for station fundraisers all over town!

How did you first come to learn about CFCR?

I learned about CFCR through a little program called Collective Voice, through my school. We had a weekly spoken word show, and I just took to it really fast.

Why do you volunteer? Why is CFCR important to the community?

I volunteer for a couple of reasons. Broadcasting looks like a pretty promising route for me to go after high school. It's a great way for me to keep in touch with the community and I mean, it's pretty rad to have a radio show in grade 11.

To me, volunteering is necessary to build community. It brings people with similar interests together and creates a fantastic body of people who just want to thrive off of each other.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you on the air?

One time last summer, while I was still hosting Snake Mountain Mixtape (Saturdays, 8:30-10pm), my computer died, taking my whole show with it. (*Side note: I found my car with a parking ticket on it that evening. Not a good day for Josie Dabo).

What’s your favourite CFCR show(s)?

Learn to Sing (Mondays, 10-11pm) is a fantastic show and so is Expansions (Fridays, 9-10:30pm). They're both so diverse and well rounded!

Who is your favourite local band?

Does Andy Shauf count? Because dayum.

Non-local band?

Hmm, it's between a few: Soko, Homeshake and Devendra Banhart.

Aside from radio, what else do you like to do?

I enjoy mumblecore film, and basically anything with Greta Gerwig in it. And if Lars Von Trier's name is in the directors slot, count me in. I also tell people I enjoy yoga, but that's a lie.

What’s your favourite/least favourite pizza topping?

Whoever thought it was ok to put olives on ANYTHING is an ungodly creature. On a lighter note, I love me some taco pizza.

What’s the best book you’ve read/movie you’ve seen recently?

I am currently reading Not That Kind of Girl by Ms. Lena Dunham. She is so self aware and that's fantastic to me. Deux jours, une nuit was the last movie that I have seen and thoroughly enjoyed. It's a french film, but subtitles are friends.
