GET TO KNOW A CFCR VOLUNTEER!
This time, we get to know Terrance Jordan, host of the eclectic and electric Private Psychedelic Reel, which has found a home on CFCR's amazing Wednesday night line-up, airing from 10:30-11:30pm for just over a year. Terrance has been an enthusiastic volunteer off the air as well, and was one of the top pledge-earning new shows during our 2014 FM-Phasis funding drive. You also may have heard Terrance's New Year's Eve on-air marathon this year, ringing in 2015 in style!

How did you first come to learn about CFCR?
It was a cold February evening in 1997.

For some reason on that particular night.. it just hit me... I'd had it with mainstream radio!  I remember it like it was yesterday... I went to the dial on my stereo and decided there had to be something else out there!  I had no knowledge of CFCR's existence but luck let the signal be nice and clear that night and the sounds coming through the airwaves were unlike anything I had ever heard before!

It was Deko-ze's Techno Prisoners program!!!

I immediately hit record and I still have that cassette tape today!

Why do you volunteer? Why is CFCR important to the community?
I volunteer because I love sharing music and discovering new music and having a show allows me to do both.  In many ways, mixing music is a sort of therapy for me and tends to reflect the activity in my head... sometimes a little too closely.

CFCR is so important to the community because it really is the only place to hear most of the music and find out about events and bands passing through town.  I am continually reminded that community radio is as relevant as ever even though there are a million ways to get music into your ears these days.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you on the air?
In early December 2014 I received a call in the studio... a call from Australia!!!  A real call from an actual listener ... it wasn't just Captain Foghorn telling me I had won a free trip to Barbados or some garbage.

Also my super extended show on NYE was really fun... ended up playing music from 10:30pm until 3:15am!  Got a couple calls from some lovely listeners out in the country playing cards and enjoying the tunes, a few messages from some loyal listeners, and it all ended up as a great way to start off 2015.

What’s your favourite CFCR show(s)?
I really love Third Verse (Wednesdays, 9-10:30pm) and it's probably the show I've been listening to longest.  Always enjoy Daniel and his Classical Discoveries program on Monday nights (7-8:30pm)... great for pyjama and story time!

I even enjoy programs that play music I don't like... just for the fact that it gets played and sent out there into the world for any unsuspecting kid to happen upon.

Unfortunately I find I listen less now that I have a show because I'm constantly working on music for my show and not just taking it all in like I used to.

Who is your favourite local band? Non-local band?
Factor, hands down.  Not a band but his studio production and accomplices are incomparable... pretty tough to beat Levitron and Enver Hampton in that regard. Honourable mention to economics too.

Outside our city?  Yowsers.. where do I begin? Shpongle, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Trentemøller, Kasabian are the ones that are always swirling 'round in my head.

Aside from radio, what else do you like to do?
Honestly... almost everything!  I love trying new things and being OK at loads of things.  I don't need to be the best in the world at any one thing... trying to accomplish that would drive me bonkers.

I love playing records... actual vinyl... and have been going strong at FLINT on the first Wednesday of every month for our "Sunglasses After Dark" music night.  I still love to blast out a dirty thumping techno set every now and then but it's usually just in my own headphones at home.

I also love baking, sewing, playing LEGO (!!!) and travelling on foot everywhere I can in our lovely city... but I better pipe down now before i start talking about long walks on the b... crap... nevermind.

What’s your favourite/least favourite pizza topping?
Pepperoni and pineapple has been a favourite for more than 20 years!

Least favourite?  Nothing comes to mind... I have yet to meet a pizza I didn't like!!!

What’s the best book you’ve read/movie you’ve seen recently?
Enjoying, Year Of No Sugar by Eve O. Schaub.  It's a practical look at how much sugar is thrown at us and how you can attempt to manage it in your own way.  I found it at the library while looking for something else totally unrelated.

Have been loving the documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey with Neil deGrasse Tyson.  The information and animation is incredible but so well explained that you don't have to be an astrophysicist to get it.

Here's a short playlist of tunes selected by Terrance himself, giving you a snippet of what you might hear on Private Psychedelic Reel on Wednesday nights. Then, go check out the PPR Soundcloud page:
