Animals in War (2025) is a powerful Ukrainian anthology film featuring Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn. The film explores the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine through the perspective of animals, revealing stories of survival, displacement, loss, and environmental destruction.
Told through seven interconnected stories created by Ukrainian and international directors, the film follows moments of rescue and resilience—a boy fleeing with a cow, a cat navigating the streets of Kyiv, and other encounters that highlight compassion, connection, and humanity amid the realities of war.
It had its world premiere at Tribeca and received three Ukrainian Film Critics Awards nominations. Creator and producer Oleg Kokhan said, “Animals have no politics and yet are the target, along with their civilian caretakers, of unrelenting waves of terror.” Kokhan pointed out the film “shows that even when facing real evil, humanity can be preserved.”
