Fun Home – A Musical Production from the Saskatoon Summer Players
Unlike musical theatre staples like The Music Man, the SSP presented last summer, Fun Home is a relatively new musical (2015) based on the true-life story of graphic novelist Alison Bechdel.
When her father dies unexpectedly, Bechdel dives into her past to tell the story of her childhood growing up in the Bechdel Funeral Home uncovering the stories and secrets that defined her family life. Alison’s discovering her own sexuality as it collides with her father’s closeted past. Set to an incredible score it’s a story of coming out and coming-of-age in a family torn apart by secrets and lies.
Director Liz Whitbread says this story is an important one to tell in today’s political climate.
“People of the LGBTQ+ community are under attack and I think it’s important to show real people and their personal stories,” she says. “Alison’s story shows the joy and power of being able to be who you are and just how healing it can be.”
