New War Posters from Ukraine
The Ukrainian Museum of Canada is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibition, New War Posters from Ukraine, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, in conjunction with our annual Christmas Yarmarok (market). This moving exhibition features the work of Pictoric, a Kyiv-based illustrators’ collective whose posters document the profound impact of the war on Ukrainian citizens and communities.
The exhibition will run from December 7, 2024, to January 11, 2025. Visitors to the Yarmarok can participate in a silent auction of the posters, with proceeds going directly to support Ukrainian artists who continue to create under exceptionally challenging and often dangerous circumstances. Winning bidders will take their selected posters home after the exhibition concludes.
This exhibition comes at a critical moment as Ukraine faces renewed and escalating violence from Russia. Just this week, Russian missiles and drones targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving millions without power. These attacks mark the 11th major assault on Ukraine’s energy sector this year, underscoring the immense toll of the ongoing war on daily life.
“Art has the power to tell stories, raise awareness, build hope, and move people to action,” said Jen Budney, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada. “This exhibition captures the courage and daily struggles of people in Ukraine, while offering tangible support to the artists who document these experiences. By bidding on a poster, our visitors can show solidarity and help ensure the war remains at the forefront of people’s minds during a time when global attention is often divided.”
The annual Christmas Yarmarok at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada is a cherished community tradition, featuring unique crafts, gifts, and delicious food. This year’s event will host 21 vendors across two floors, with hot meals and coffee available so visitors can enjoy lunch while they shop.
The Museum continues its efforts to raise awareness about the war into 2025. On January 22, we will open The War That Changes Everything. This powerful exhibition will feature items from the museum’s permanent collection, including war-damaged doors from Doors: Through the Horror of War, a nationally touring exhibition first shown at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in early 2023 and which will join the museum’s permanent collection in December. A come-and-go reception and gathering will be held all day on Saturday, February 22, 2025, marking the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
