Opening Night of Enigma: Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra
What did Dorothy say… “There’s no place like home”?
While she may not be wearing ruby slippers, Saskatchewan-born conductor Tania Miller shares the sentiment. After a whirlwind few years, she returns to the province that raised her to help open the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra’s 94th season with… Enigma!
Miller was the first ever female music director of a major Canadian orchestra in Victoria, a position she held for 14 years, has conducted all over the world and was recently named the artistic director and conductor of Hamilton’s Brott Music Festival. It’s a hefty resume to be sure but Miller is taking time to return to the TCU Place stage September 21st. Miller will celebrate the opening night performance with local musicians and mentors she credits with her start as well as friend and world-renowned pianist Sara Davis Buechner.
The program will include Buechner’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 23. The orchestra will also perform Home, a piece that Miller commissioned from friend Michael Oesterle for the Victoria Symphony. The evening will conclude with Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36 or the Enigma Variations. The entire program is a celebration of friendship and family and it’s the perfect way to kick off a new season.
