Prairie Ukrainian Film Festival – The Eve of Ivan Kupalo/ Vechir na Ivana Kupala

3:30 PM – PUFF Klassyka: The Eve of Ivan Kupalo/ Vechir na Ivana Kupala (1968)
Little seen outside of Ukraine even today, The Eve of Ivan Kupalo (1965), shot on 70mm, is the second film directed by Yuri Illienko, a contemporary of famed filmmaker Serhiy Paradzhanov (Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors). A loose adaptation of Mykola Hohol’s story of the same name, the film depicts a story of forbidden love through mystical folk motifs, ritual beliefs, and vignettes of village life. Though very much a portrait of days gone by, Illienko also suggests a surreal critique of Ukraine’s colonial domination by Russia.
