About
Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan is a non-profit organization that represents, advocates for, and supports the 11 Friendship Centres in Saskatchewan. They source opportunities for positive impact, promote effective Friendship Centre governance and operations, and develop & uphold standards for collective success.
As a Provincial-Territorial Association, AFCS advocates at provincial and national levels to ensure Saskatchewan Friendship Centres are able to support the urban Indigenous community. Supports may include but are not limited to: culture, health, housing, education, employment, children and youth, women and gender diverse issues, justice, and social development.
What is a Friendship Centre?
A Friendship Centre is a not-for-profit urban Indigenous service delivery organization that provides culturally based programs and services in many urban communities across Canada. Although the focus is on delivering culturally based Indigenous programs and services, they operate under a status-blind policy which means anyone, regardless of Status, can make use of the services and programs.
Friendship Centres offer culturally relevant programming in education and training, employment opportunities and counseling, health and wellbeing, children and youth, recreation, housing, justice and economic development. They also offer language training, skills development, computer training, work-site placements, nutrition programs, healing circles, alcohol and drug counseling, summer and winter camps, day care centres, youth peer counseling, youth drop-in centres, organized sports and leagues, wilderness training and facility rentals. The list is continuously growing, and Friendship Centres are adding more programs and services every year.
