Remember that Sesame Street song, “These are the people in your neighbourhood?” Well, here’s a new feature about the people at your community radio station!  You like to party, and we like to party, so why don’t we party together?  Join us for...

GET TO KNOW A CFCR VOLUNTEER!

This time, we're getting two volunteers for the price of one! If you're up on Friday mornings early enough to listen to the 8-10am Green Eggs & Ham, you'll surely know the funny and charming antics of Brett & Tom-Tom! These two fine fellows have been holding down this time slot for AGES, even though sometimes one or both of them are jet-setting around the world. Both these guys are great volunteers off the air as well, with Brett volunteering his time on the station's Board of Directors, and Tom-Tom offering up his musical talents (as part of local band Wizards) for various CFCR fundraiser shows.

How did you first come to learn about CFCR?

BRETT: In my college years, fumbling with the FM dial.

TOM-TOM: I used to swim competitively and would have practice early in the morning most weekdays. Before I was old enough to drive I used to get a ride with some older friends and we'd put on CFCR on the way home from practice. One morning, Green Eggs & Ham was proceeding with its usual eclectic mix of morning music when the hosts came on to announce that “It's 7:30 in the morning, and you know what that means: time for death metal in the morning” and I thought that was the best thing ever.

Why do you volunteer? Why is CFCR important to the community?

BRETT: I volunteer to keep up with new music and to help CFCR. Community radio is integral to the local music scene. Without CFCR, I don't think that Saskatoon would have the quality of shows it currently enjoys.

TOM-TOM: To quote my friend, Paul Duncan: “I just want to be a part of something.” But more than that, I can't imagine a Saskatoon without CFCR. The incredible diversity of interests and tastes represented by all of the hosts and programs, the community partnerships with unique local businesses, and the many high-caliber shows that CFCR organizes, sponsors, and promotes are all integral to the arts and life in Saskatoon. I feel privileged to be a part of something so cool!

What's the craziest thing that's happened to you on the air?

BRETT: Tom-Tom and I took off our shirts once. It was epic.

TOM-TOM: Brett and I once took our shirts off for an entire show. Pretty racy stuff.

What's your favourite CFCR show(s)?

BRETT: I think Sex+ is a great listen and The Buzz on Fridays is always quite funny.

TOM-TOM: Tin Cans & Twine and Hallucinations really make me feel, you know?

Who is your favourite local band? Non-local band?

BRETT: I don't have a favourite local band, but I recently saw The Faps; they've made me believe in rock & roll again.

TOM-TOM: First off, I can't overstate how much I dislike The Faps. My new favourite local band is Susan - they are pushing all the right buttons for me right now. One of my all-time favourite bands is actually comprised of some ex-Saskatoonians, Mahogany Frog!

Aside from radio, what else do you like to do?

BRETT: Travel, bicycle and play Ultimate Frisbee.

TOM-TOM: I like to procrastinate writing my thesis by riding my bike, making music and, most recently, DIY baptisms.

What’s your favourite pizza topping?

TOM-TOM: Smoked cheese!

What’s the best book you’ve read/movie you’ve seen recently?

TOM-TOM I've been reading Borges' short stories before bed lately and that's been setting me up for some good dreamy times.

And now, here is a short playlist chosen by each of the guys. For the full effect, it's highly recommended that you tune in to Green Eggs & Ham each and every Friday morning from 8-10am, although two of Brett's tracks contain profanities, so he can't play them on his show normally... You have been warned.
